This week’s super teacher is Margarita Carrasco from Westland Hialeah Senior high. Since 2007, Ms. Carassco has headed the school’s health science academy where she preps her students for careers in the health field, including the nursing industry.
Ms. Carrasco knows what she’s talking about; shes been a registered nurse for over 30 years. Her experience and her passion to go above and beyond are two of the reasons she’s Westland’s current teacher of the year.
Ms. Carrasco’s also the advisor of the school’s HOSA chapter – which stands for Health Occupation Students of America – and its HIP advisor, which is Westland’s health information project. And if you ask her students, she really is a hip advisor
At the end of the school year, students in this program take the industry certification nursing assistant exam. Statewide, the percentage of students who pass this test is around 54 percent. At Hialeah Westland it’s over 83 percent.
So basically, when it comes to teaching, Ms. Carrasco is no dummy (shot of the dummy). In fact, quite the opposite, she’s our super teacher of the week.
