MIAMI -- The Miami-Dade County Public Schools will start the 2020-2021 academic year digitally amid coronavirus concerns.
The school district unveiled its plan to reopen schools on Wednesday. According to the school district, the first day of classes has been pushed back from August 24 to Monday, August 31 and will be done with e-learning instead of the traditional brick-and-mortar education.
Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie also plans to not reopen schools in his district. Runcie said he will recommend e-learning in Broward County.
The announcement from Miami-Dade County comes as Governor Ron DeSantis continues to double down on his stance that children should return to in-person learning this fall while also giving parents the right to choose.
Gov. DeSantis said on Wednesday that having an option is more administratively challenging but "putting the power in the hands of the parents makes the most sense."
