South Florida Farm Partners With Lyft to Provide Free Rides and Food

A local farm has partnered with Lyft to provide free rides and free food to food-insecure South Floridians during the COVID-19 pandemic. The partnership will provide families with a Lyft ride credit valued at up to $25, allowing them to get picked up and driven to a designated Farm Share facility.

"What we're doing is treating it just like our normal drive-through distributions, which is the recipients are coming through with their windows up and the trunk open. The same would apply for this program. We place that food in the back of the trunk, which includes canned goods, produce, a protein , canned tuna fish, rice, water, etc. We'll close the trunk and they'll continue back to their house, that way there's no contact between the recipient and my staff," said CEO of Farm Share, Stephen Shelley.

A smartphone is required in order to download the Lyft app. A special code is needed for this to work. Farm Share will disclose the code to its South Florida partner agencies who have worked to identify people in-need through their network in the community.
