The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a great number of new challenges to society all over the world. Clearly, the most critical of them all is the loss of jobs.

Here in South Florida, hundreds of thousands of people are now looking for work.
Today, we share tips and resources that will help you rebound and make yourself stand out to hiring managers.

“We teach them how to build a resume at the same time we teach those clients how to search for a job,” said Felipe.

Felipe Pinzón is the Senior VP of Strategy and Programs at Hispanic Unity of Florida, an organization that provides assistance to low-income families in Broward County.

“It’s a great time for them to build their skills,” said Milenis.

Financial Stability Manager at Hispanic Unity of Florida, Milenis Johancsik, specializes in helping those in need of a job prepare. She says if you lost your job because of COVID-19, now is the time to revamp your resume.

“Maybe enroll in a program that would give them the skills that they’ve wanted to and go after that dream career that they've always wanted,” said Milenis.

Milenis says it’s important to showcase relevant experience and transferable skills.

“Number one is to highlight the most relevant experience that they have based on the job that they’re applying for. Including personal accomplishments is a huge piece of the real estate inside the resume, the accomplishments is very big, it speaks highly of the employee. And a huge one is to proofread, I think that we take that for granted sometimes. They must proofread those resumes and have somebody else to proofread it for you,” said Milenis.

Once companies start hiring again after COVID-19, there will be a lot of competition for jobs. So, if you’re forced to find a new career path, Milenis says it’s ok to start small.

“I would say definitely take that leap and start entry level because you will be that much more prepared within the company and see things from different tiers. So, I definitely would say take it if that’s something they want to do and see themselves doing it for eight hours a day,” said Milenis.
