The presidential election results led a nine-year-old girl in Cooper City to write a letter to President and Vice President - elects Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. This little girl says this election has given her hope for the future.
“I just want them to know that I’m supporting them and that they’re good people,” said Sydney.
Sydney Carlo is the daughter of Samantha and Anthony.
Samantha says politics has always been a topic of conversation in the family. But this year was different because Sydney was old enough to understand.
“We’ve always been invested in the issues that impact our family and we’ve always taken voting seriously. I’ve voted in all of the elections since I turned 18,” said Samantha.
Sydney wrote the letter on Saturday as soon she as she got home from gymnastics.
“I said Sydney, guess what, Joe Biden was just announced to have won the presidency and she let out a shriek and there were tears but she said mommy these are emotional good tears,” said Samantha.
The letter reads:
“Dear President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, my name is Sydney Carlo. I’m 9 years old and I live in Florida. I cried when I heard you won. I know you both are amazing people and will work hard to bring our country together. I voted for you in my school’s election. Just like you two, I want to grow up and help my country. America is a great country but you made it a lot better”.
“I let her listen for herself and listen to things that president Trump had said and listened to things all of the candidates on the democratic side said and from early on she has always said ‘Joe seems like a nice man mommy, do you think he can win?’ And then we explained the primary process and electoral process,” said Samantha, Sydney’s mother.
“It’s so nice to see that she’s so interested in it and invested and curious as to what’s going on,” Anthony, Sydney’s father.
Harris will be the first woman, first black person and first South Asian American to be elected U.S. Vice President. The election of Harris giving so many young girls, like Sydney, hope.
“It makes me feel that girls can do anything now. Like run for president or be in the NFL or anything,” said Sydney.
Samantha told me the letter is already in an envelope, ready to be mailed out once Biden moves into the White House.
